Remembering The Silver Valley Rangers

You maybe wondering who "The Silver Valley Rangers" were.  They were a band my dad was in while he played guitar.  My late Aunt Jean named them and along with my dad and Aunt Ellie , they formed the country western group along with two other members.  Every Saturday night in the early fifties, The Silver Valley Rangers got together and played at dances around Delaware, Ohio.   One near Glenn road and 36/37 at a barn dance.   They even traveled to West Virginia to be on the "Western Hayride and The Sally Flowers Show" on the radio.  Things changed abruptly soon after when the band decided to go out to eat one night at a little place off of 23.  Route 23 back then was only two lanes and somewhat dangerous when it was rainy and or foggy like it was that night.
My dad didn't feel up to going and neither his adopted two sisters who were the main singers of the group, so dad drove them home.    Today Havens Road(named for my Great Uncle Milton who lived on that stretch and president who was The Delaware County Bank then ) was once  known as old 23.  It became Havens Road when The Nash my dad's band members were in were struck head-on by a northbound car driven by ladies from Marion, Ohio.  All involved were killed.  Soon after Delaware upgraded 23 and moved it west a little, this gave birth to Havens and Stratford Roads.
It wasn't until the summer of 1981, that I really got to know Aunt Jean and Aunt Ellie and their families. My dad started to play his guitar more then.  Few other people who knew my parents joined in like dad's cousin Ron Price, Bob Mc Nutt, who went to school with my Grandma Sarah Havens, Russell Shicks from church and Bob and Rose, who lived where the kids and I live now.   My dad kept playing up into the nineties until he couldn't any longer.  I always remember those days when dad would have his "Jam Sessions" along with B.B.Q's whenever they would gather.   All of those wonderful people are gone now except my Aunt Ellie, her husband (Uncle Bill) and Russell.
In some small way my late Aunt Jean had claimed a small amount of fame with "The Silver Valley Rangers" even though they only recorded one song "Waltz Of The Wind".  The 45 remains somewhere in the family.  Her beloved "Silver Valley Rangers" will always be a part of me as it was my dad to celebrate the youth and dreams of another generation.
